Nagareyama Electrical 17 is an illumination event featuring a collaboration of haiku and light. At the Issa Souju Memorial Hall, the venue of the event, a merchant house and garden from the late Edo period will be beautifully decorated with light flowers and haiku projections. The “17” in the event name represents the number of words in haiku, “5, 7, 5,” and visitors’ haiku works will be projected as part of the lights. The event will be held for three days from January 19 to 21. Admission is 300 yen, and free for junior high school students and younger. Why not create special memories while enjoying the fantastic nighttime garden? This is a spot you must visit at least once this winter. Hiregasaki Obisha event
A special day to experience 300 years of history! obisha event in Hiregasaki
The Hiregasaki Obisha Event is a special event with a tradition of more than 300 years, held every year on the third Sunday of January at the hiregasaki Raijinja Shrine. The highlight of the event is a ceremony in which the duty performers, dressed as the seven gods of good fortune, shoot arrows at the targets of red and blue demons to drive away evil and pray for a good harvest and family safety. The ceremony is derived from the “obi-sha” ritual handed down throughout the Kanto region.
On the day of the festival, there is a “Naorai” ceremony with Kagura dances and feasts, which attracts a large crowd of locals and tourists. Designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Asset by Nagareyama City, this event is a great opportunity to deeply experience the local culture. The Nagareyama Shinsengumi Festival is an annual event held in April to celebrate the history of the Shinsengumi and will be held for the 21st time in 2024.
This year’s festival will be held from April 5 to 16 as “Shinsengumi Nagareyama Anniversal Week” and will include a commemorative exhibition, lectures, and tours of historical sites. The commemorative exhibition will feature photos of Shinsengumi activities and related goods under the theme of “The Truth of the Shinsengumi and the Background to the Nagareyama Incident. In addition, on April 7 and 13, there will be lectures by experts to learn more about the history of the Shinsengumi.
In particular, a guided tour of historical sites, led by a guide dressed in a Shinsengumi uniform, will provide visitors with a rare opportunity to experience history firsthand while touring the places where the Shinsengumi were actually stationed. Cherry blossoms at Sakuragi Shrine

Nagareyama Fireworks Festival (usually held in August)
The highlight of the festival is that the “Nagareyama Fireworks Festival” and the “Misato Fireworks Festival” are held at the same time, and both fireworks are launched from the banks of the Edogawa River. The total number of fireworks shot off from both cities is as many as 14,000. Akagi Shrine Oshimenawa Event and Grand Festival
Autumn festival with history and tradition! Akagi Shrine Oshimenawa Event and Grand Festival
The Akagi Shrine O-shimenawa Event and Grand Festival is a traditional event held every October in Nagareyama City. In the Oshimenawa event, local shrine parishioners join forces to make a huge shimenawa rope, about 10 meters long and weighing 150 kg, and dedicate it to the shrine gate. This shimenawa is designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Asset of the city, and the total weight of the three ropes together is approximately 500 kg. The Grand Festival includes an evening festival on Saturday and a portable shrine parade on Sunday. The sight of the mikoshi going around the town and returning to Akagi Shrine in the evening to run up the steep stairs all at once is a sight to behold.
