Experience] A peaceful afternoon spent at “Kosha Cafe Toukan,” a hidden gem in Nagareyama’s old town.
Hello, I’m “Kotaka”, your concierge in Otakanomori! I am “Kotaka,” your concierge in Otakanomori! How are you doing? Today, I, “Kotaka”, will introduce you to the charms of “Kosha Cafe Toukan”, a renovated rice storehouse built in 1963 in the old town of Nagareyama!
Moved to 2022 from the café in the Sasaya storehouse warehouse.
Formerly operating as “Kura no Cafe + Gallery Toukan” in the Sasaya storehouse (National Tangible Cultural Property) built in 1898, it will be relocated in October 2022 when the lease expires and reopened as “FURUYA CAFE TOURAN”. The store was renovated from a warehouse of Nagareyama Shokuryo, a rice store built in 1963, and like the previous store, it is a peaceful space with a sense of history.
The store is located about a 5-minute walk from Nagareyama Station on the Nagareyama Line along Nagareyama Kaido.

Inside the store
We went a little late, around 3pm. We didn’t have to wait, but the place was almost full.
The café is housed in a historic building and is decorated with antique furniture and ornaments.

Today’s Lunch Menu
Lunch using local ingredients, Koji and Mirin, sweets using Nagareyama’s special Mirin, seasonal cakes, etc… The owner, who is a Koji Meister, makes them by hand every day. Handmade and natural ingredients are the concept.

plate lunch
「季節野菜と糀のごはんプレート」をいただきました。 ランチには地元の食材や糀のものが使われています。
- Boiled pork with special spicy sauce
- Sukiyaki style with deep-fried tofu and garland chrysanthemum
- Salad with mirin and salted malt dressing
- Black rice and rice by #KiyosatoFarm
- Soup of the Day
There is something indescribably satisfying about the aroma and depth of flavor of iced coffee in the nose.
The gentle taste of mirin (sweet cooking rice wine) made them all delicious! This is my kind of lunch plate. All the flavors were delicious.
In the gallery attached to the building, ceramics and other items from Kasama and Mashiko are exhibited and sold. The gallery also holds irregular exhibitions of works and workshops, making it a center for local culture.
Ahhhh it was delicious! Thank you for the food!
